Choisya 'White Dazzler'

A Choisya ternata 'White Dazzler' is a compact, fragrant evergreen shrub—great for UK gardens if you give it the right balance of sun, shelter, and drainage.

  • Light Best in full sun to partial shade. More sun = more flowers, but it still does well in light shade

  • Water Water regularly while establishing. Once settled, it’s fairly drought-tolerant. Avoid waterlogged soil—roots don’t like sitting wet

  • Soil Prefers well-draining soil. Tolerates a range (including slightly alkaline soils common in parts of the UK)

  • Feeding A general fertiliser or compost mulch in spring is enough. Not a heavy feeder

  • Pruning Light prune after flowering (late spring/early summer). This encourages a second flush of blooms later in the season. Avoid hard pruning into old wood

  • Shelter Protect from cold winds and hard frost, especially when young. A sheltered wall or hedge line works well

What to expect

  • Glossy, narrow evergreen leaves

  • Clusters of white, citrus-scented flowers (usually spring, often again later)

  • A naturally neat, rounded shape—less pruning needed than older choisya types

Common issues

  • Yellowing leaves → often poor drainage or cold exposure

  • Leaf scorch → cold winds or harsh winter conditions

  • Fewer flowers → too much shade or pruning at the wrong time

This is one of the more “generous” shrubs in terms of what it gives back:

Fragrance The scented flowers (and even the leaves) release a light citrus smell, which can genuinely lift the feel of a space—especially near paths or seating areas. It offers a year-round structure, being evergreen, it keeps your garden looking alive even in winter.

Pollinator support, its flowers attract bees and other insects when in bloom. Low-maintenance greenery once it is established, it’s relatively hands-off, which helps keep gardening enjoyable rather than demanding. Mood and sensory benefits include fragrance + greenery + seasonal flowering which all contribute to the effects studied in horticultural therapy—especially the calming impact of scent and routine outdoor care.
